Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

During our first weekend in Venice, I was a little shocked at how it was so difficult to find trash cans or even a recycle bin.  We even had to pay for PUBLIC RESTROOMS.  That would never happen in NH... well maybe.

Once we arrived to Ascoli Piceno, I was about to find out that Italians aren't lazy litterers, like I had thought previously. What I was about to experience was something that many Americans would never do...

Above is our trash schedule:

Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday are for COMPOST only.  We were provided with a bin for compost.

Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday Sunday are for trash only.

Mondays are the only day for paper and plastic.

Glass can be recycled any day of the week in the green trash receptacle outside our apartment.  Everything else must be sitting outside our apartment building by 8:30 AM.

We must use the bags provided from our landlord and they are color coordinated.

COMPOST BIN

Umbrella Basket---> we actually use it for our plastic and glass.
PAPER

It's unfortunate that at home we have to pay for these extra services such as compost. It is so simple and makes such a difference in the amount of wastes.  To put it into perspective, we have had one trash bag all week for six girls and it is still NOT full. Imagine if the USA had these systems in place...
